The Drops Volt 9’2’’ is the short noserider in the Drops 2010 range. We tested the board over more than three weeks. Waves were ranging from knee high to solid overheads.
Introduction
The shaper claims that the major selling points of the Drops Volt 9’2’’ can be summarized in great noseriding abilities coupled with a still good potential for tail maneuvers. How did the Volt perform in the real world? Let’s have a look at its features first.
Shape
Speaking of the Volt’s outline, the nose is rounded and actually huge, about the widest we’ve seen so far in a board in this range. By contrast, the square tail appears, streamlined even though it is actually large and meant to provide plenty of stability to the board.
As expected, given the board’s program, the scoop rocker line is characterized by a continuous curve, so you won’t find plenty of nose rocker and tail kick in this SUB.
The rails are quite hard in the tail section, rounded around the center of the board and neutral through the nose.
The main feature of the Volt’s bottom is apparently the huge monoconcave under the nose section.
Construction and features
The build quality of the board is very good. The Volt 9’2’’ features a thruster setup with a US Box central fin and two mini tuttles. The fins, made of compressed glass fiber, are on pair with the quality of the board. Unfortunately this SUB is not equipped with a built in handle but it does feature a TT box for SUP Sailing. The pad is quite good, light and grippy.
On the water
In the surf the Volt 9’2’’ showed a quite good behavior with just one glitch: in very steep waves it is prone to nose diving. However, it just takes a few takeoffs to get used to that, as it is sufficient to shift the body weight further towards the tail and push harder with the back foot to overcome this slight problem. Being the Volt an extremely stable board for light to heavy paddlers, it really shines in choppy conditions. In fact, it is one of the best boards suited to Euro conditions tested so far. Here's a video filmed during the very first Volt Test session.
Its noseriding capabilities are by far the best in its class but the Volt still performs well in the tail maneuvers. The Volt always feels grippy in the turns, holding speed throughout the carve. The rail to rail passage is good, particularly for the heavyweights. Not to mention, the Volt’s wave catching ability is excellent. The row effect, as expected, is in the moderate range.
Testing the Drops Volt
Conclusions and verdict
The Volt 9’2’’ is a very serious performer capable to deliver some of the best performance to date in euro conditions. It is a board targeted to the heavier, expert paddlers for its great noseriding abilities and good carving characteristics. Beginners to intermediate paddlers in the light to medium weight range will find the Volt a great all-rounder with unmatched stability in its class.
The Drops Volt 9'2'' is not just a great board for noseriders. In fact it is the most versatile SUP Surfing dedicated board tested to date. As such it comes highly recommended to paddlers of all level and weight, particularly to expert and heavier SUPers.
